In 2016, I produced an interactive installation at the Amsterdam Music Festival and the Flying Dutch Festival for TMobile (a telecom provider). The installation let festival vistors be a virtual DJ on the main stage. The next day each visitor received a personalized after movie of the whole event featuring them DJ-ing next to Showtek, Amin van Buuren, DJ Harwell and David Guetta. For this installation I used my audio-visual instrument SenSei, Ableton Live and Augmented Stage.

Flying Dutch Festival

TMobile asked me to help promote their virtual reality experience at the Flying Dutch Festival. Using a pair of virtual reality glasses connected to a 360º camera on the main stage, people were able to watch the event live from the DJ booth at the main stage. A cool experience, but only accessible to a limited amount of people. So TMobile asked me to come up with an idea to reach more people with this installation.

To do this, I added another installation to the dome. While waiting to get the virtual reality glasses, visitors of the dome were filmed with a 3D camera. Each time somebody passed the camera, 20 seconds of high energy music sounded and the visitor saw him/herself behind the DJ booth on the main stage as the DJ of the event in real time. People would jump and dance and show their ‘DJ skills’. A fun experience.

After their 20 seconds of fame, their email address and name were noted. Besides that, a video recording was made of the visitor wearing the virtual reality glasses. The next day this information was used to send every visitor of the dome an after movie of the Flying Dutch Festival starring themselves as the DJ on the main stage, with a VJ show featuring their name and shots of them wearing the virtually reality glasses in the dome. This video was easily shareable and because people featured in the video themselves, most of them did enthusiastically. This showed TMobile and their dome with the virtual reality experience to many more people in a cool way.

Amsterdam Music Festival

At the Amsterdam Music Festival the virtual reality installations were dropped by TMobile and the dome only contained my after movie installation. Constantly people came to the dome to ‘be the DJ’. This way more than 250 personal after movies were created during the event and shared on social media.

This project is produced with my audio-visual instrument SenSei and Augmented Stage. To fund the development of SenSei and Augmented Stage (and now EboSuite) I produce interactive audio-visual projects and shows with EboStudio. Very talented, experienced and skilled technicians and designers. I am very fortunate that I can work with them. And you can too. Need help for an audio-visual project or concept?
